Join us for a free, fascinating presentation by the Holland Land Office Museum exploring how the landscape of Genesee County has changed over time and how those changes reflect the evolving relationship between people and the land. From early settlement and agriculture to conservation and wildlife protection, the story of land use is deeply connected to the region's history.
A major focus of the program will be the history and transformation of the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge, whose wetlands and surrounding lands have experienced many different uses, owners, and visions over the centuries. Once shaped by natural processes, agriculture, and development, the refuge now stands as an important example of conservation and habitat restoration in Western New York.
Through historical perspectives and local stories, this presentation will examine how changing values, economic needs, and environmental awareness have influenced the proposed uses of land throughout Genesee County’s history. Discover how the landscape we see today reflects generations of human interaction with the natural world and why protecting these places remains important for the future.
