This introductory class explores the fundamentals of improvisational theater in a supportive, low-pressure environment designed for beginners. As adults, we often lose opportunities to play, experiment, and think creatively without worrying about getting things “right.” Improv offers a way to reconnect with that sense of play while building confidence, creativity, and presence.
Through group exercises and guided activities, students will learn core improv concepts such as listening, agreement, spontaneity, and collaboration. The emphasis is on participation and supporting others rather than on being “funny” or performing for an audience. No prior acting or improv experience is required, and students are encouraged to participate at their own comfort level.
Students will be introduced to the core principles of improvisation through a variety of group exercises and games, including:
The fundamentals of improvisational theater and how improv works
Listening and responding in the moment
Agreement and collaboration (“yes, and”)
Spontaneity and letting go of overthinking
Building scenes and ideas as a group
Supporting scene partners and working as an ensemble
Using games and structured exercises to explore creativity and play
Applying improv skills to communication, confidence, and everyday situations
