Witness a rare 19th-century tradition as the wood-fired kiln comes to life inside the Potter’s Shop at Genesee Country Village & Museum!
GCV&M is the only living history museum in the Northeast that fires salt-glazed stoneware in a wood-fired kiln using traditional 19th-century methods. The kiln will be filled with newly crafted pottery, bricked closed and lit early in the morning. Museum potters will continuously stoke the fire throughout the day as temperatures climb to nearly 2,300 degrees.
During the final hour, salt will be introduced into the firebox to create the pottery’s glazed surface, while the intense heat transforms its cobalt decorations into their traditional blue color.
After the pieces have cooled, they will be available for purchase at the Flint Hill Store and Village Mercantile.
Admission also includes access to all Spooky Saturday activities.
