Discover how 19th-century New Yorkers prepared for winter during a special Homeschool Day at Genesee Country Village & Museum! Explore the Historic Village and learn how seasonal changes affected everyday duties, from harvesting and winterizing homes to traditional crafts and food preservation.
Homeschoolers will have the opportunity to:

Make a candle to take home

Hear seasonal tales from a Haudenosaunee storyteller

Help prepare a 19th-century recipe in a historic kitchen

Learn how sausage and smoked meats were prepared for winter storage before refrigeration
Optional workshops may be added to the Homeschool Day experience:
Hearth Cooking with Emma
Time: 11 am–noon
Cost: $15 per person
Ages: 7 and older
Follow a 19th-century “receipt” to prepare and enjoy Christmas Cakes for Good Children.
Weaving with Kayleigh
Time: Noon–2 pm
Cost: $15 per person
Ages: 10 and older
Learn about the importance of fiber arts in the 19th century, practice basic weaving skills and create a mug rug to take home.
Woodcarving with Ben
Time: 1–3 pm
Cost: $15 per person
Ages: 12 and older
Become a woodcarving apprentice and learn how to whittle a wooden spoon to take home.
Preparing for Winter Homeschool Day admission must be purchased or reserved with all workshop tickets. Parents who wish to remain with their children during a workshop must also purchase a workshop ticket.
