Snow Way! We Love Winter, Too

When the temperatures drop, the fun doesn’t stop — not here in Western New York! From frozen ponds and forested trails to sparkling waterfalls and cozy lodges, winter brings a whole new kind of magic to our region. Whether you’re lacing up skates, strapping on snowshoes, or casting a line through the ice, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the snowy season across Allegany, Genesee, Orleans, and Wyoming Counties.

Allegany County: Slopes, Snow, and Starry Skies

In Allegany County, winter adventures come in all speeds—from the quiet crunch of snow under your boots to the rush of carving down a mountainside.

For downhill thrills, head to Swain Resort, the go-to destination for winter fun in the Western NY Wilds. With trails for every ability level, it’s the perfect place for beginners to learn on the Magic Carpet or for seasoned skiers and snowboarders to tackle black diamond runs and terrain parks.

Prefer a slower pace? Alma Pond remains a favorite for ice fishing and peaceful winter scenery. Cast for perch, pike, or bluegill on a crisp morning, then settle in for a night of stargazing beneath some of the darkest skies in New York. Whether you’re gliding downhill or soaking in the stillness, Allegany County delivers a full spectrum of winter wonder.

Genesee County: Skate, Ski, and Snowshoe Adventures

Bundle up for outdoor fun at Darien Lakes State Park, where miles of multi-use trails welcome hikers, cross-country skiers, and snowmobilers. Don’t miss the heated shelter next to the outdoor skating rink - it’s a great place to warm up between laps!

Prefer your skating indoors? Glide across the NHL-sized rink at the David McCarthy Memorial Ice Arena, open since 1978 and beloved for its open skates, party rentals, and cozy snack bar serving up hot chocolate and treats.

For a peaceful nature escape, head to the Genesee County Park & Forest Interpretive Center, the oldest county forest in New York State. With 431 acres of rolling hills, snowshoe rentals, self-guided trails, a toboggan hill, and inviting pavilions, it’s a true four-season wonderland.

Orleans County: Winter Waters & Year-Round Angling Adventures

Don’t pack away your fishing gear when the snow flies! Orleans County is a hidden gem for winter anglers. While many know it for its world-class trout and salmon runs, this county’s waters offer exciting cold-weather opportunities that stretch far beyond the fall season.

On the Oak Orchard River and its neighboring tributaries, dedicated fly fishers can be found casting for big migratory browns and steelhead all winter long. Egg pattern flies, flashback nymphs, and egg-sucking leeches are the go-tos here, with the promise of a fight that’ll warm even the chilliest day. Smaller creeks like Johnson and Sandy also reward patient anglers with steady action and fewer crowds.

If you prefer the thrill of hard-water fishing, head to Lake Alice, where ice anglers target perch, panfish, pike, and even carp. The scene here is peaceful and picturesque. Tip-ups dotting the frozen surface, snowflakes falling softly, and that quiet anticipation only winter fishing brings.

From big lake trolling to quiet inland streams, Orleans County offers four-season fishing that rivals anywhere in New York. So, grab your gear, layer up, and experience a winter adventure where every cast could lead to your next great fish tale.

Genesee & Orleans Counties: Four Seasons of Fun at Iroquois Refuge

Spanning both counties, the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge is one of Western New York’s best-kept secrets. With more than 10,000 acres of wild beauty and a state-of-the-art visitor center, this refuge is made for exploration in every season. In winter, snowshoe or ski the trails, pause for some birdwatching, or simply enjoy the stillness of snow-covered wetlands. It’s part of the National Wildlife Refuge System; the only network of federal lands dedicated specifically to wildlife conservation and an unforgettable stop for outdoor lovers.

Wyoming County: Letchworth and Beyond

Experience the Grand Canyon of the East in all its frosty glory at Letchworth State Park, voted the #1 State Park in the USA and #1 New York State Attraction by USA Today readers. Winter visitors can enjoy snow tubing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and serene scenic overlooks — all blanketed in glistening snow. Warm up afterward at the historic Glen Iris Inn, open year-round for overnight stays and hearty meals.

Continue your outdoor adventure at the Trillium Nature Center (formerly Beaver Meadow Audubon Center) in North Java. Surrounded by 8 miles of trails weaving through meadows, ponds, and wetlands, Trillium offers four-season exploration for all ages. From snowshoe treks to wildlife watching and hands-on programs, this accessible nature preserve invites you to experience the quieter side of winter.
