Scenic Trails of Fresh Air Adventures

Western New York’s landscapes invite exploration in every season, and the scenic trails of Fresh Air Adventures highlight some of the most memorable places to hike, ride, paddle, and wander through nature. Across Allegany, Genesee, Orleans, and Wyoming counties, trails wind through forests, wetlands, canal towns, and dramatic gorges! Looking for a peaceful nature walk? Wildlife encounters? Adrenaline-filled rides? These trails have that, and more, making it easy to step outside and discover the beauty of the countryside.

Allegany County

In northern Allegany County, the forests and hills surrounding Houghton offer miles of scenic exploration. The trails at Houghton University wind through the Genesee River Valley landscape, with more than four miles of paths including the Overlook Trail, Old Oak Trail, Devil’s Back Trail, and Mabel’s Trail. Open year-round to the public, the forest is a favorite for hikers looking for quiet woodland views and a chance to reconnect with nature. You can also add a little friendly competition to their outing with a round on the university’s disc golf course!

For those seeking a high-energy outdoor adventure, Tall Pines ATV Park in Andover delivers an entirely different trail experience. With more than 90 miles of routes ranging from beginner to advanced, riders can explore field roads, dirt bike trails, mud holes, and even a motocross track. After a full day on the trails, relax around the fire at Kent Beer Company, the farm’s on-site brewery, or stay overnight in cabins or campsites.

Genesee County

In Genesee County, trails connect nature with community spaces and historic landscapes. At DeWitt Recreation Area in Batavia, 64 acres of parkland offer something for every outdoor enthusiast, from hiking paths and cross-country skiing trails to kayaking, fishing, and picnic spots along the water. Families can easily spend an entire day here enjoying playgrounds, open green space, and year-round recreation in a peaceful setting just minutes from downtown.

For a longer walk or bike ride, check out the Ellicott Trail. The nearly 10-mile, multi-use path links several of Batavia’s parks and historic areas. Built along former railroad beds and city pathways, the crushed-stone trail winds past the scenic DeWitt Recreation Area, through the historic Elmwood Cemetery, and across Tonawanda Creek. The route offers a relaxed ride or stroll suitable for all skill levels while connecting neighborhoods, parks, and the heart of the city.

Outdoor exploration continues at the Genesee County Park & Forest Interpretive Center, where miles of trails weave through forests, wetlands, and meadows. Seasonal programs, guided walks, and exhibits at the interpretive center make it a great stop if you’re interested in learning more about the region’s natural ecosystems. A short drive away, Darien Lakes State Park offers even more ways to enjoy the outdoors, with hiking and horseback riding trails winding through hills, woodlands, and ravines surrounding Harlow Lake. Visitors can also enjoy fishing, camping, disc golf, and winter recreation, making it a year-round destination for fresh air and adventure.

Shared by Genesee & Orleans Counties

Straddling the line between Genesee and Orleans counties, the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge offers one of the most remarkable outdoor landscapes in Western New York. Spanning more than 10,000 acres along the Atlantic Flyway, the refuge is a haven for wildlife and a dream destination for birdwatchers, hikers, and paddlers. Trails and overlooks provide access to marshes, forests, and wetlands; perfect for viewing migrating birds, bald eagles, and countless other species.

One of the most popular walks is the Swallow Hollow Nature Trail, a 1.3-mile educational path that guides visitors through three distinct habitats: forested wetlands, upland hardwood forest, and emerging marshland. With interpretive signs and audio tour stations along the way, the trail turns a simple walk into an engaging nature experience. The refuge also offers year-round recreation, from canoeing and fishing to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter, making it a destination worth visiting in every season.

Orleans County

Following the historic Erie Canal through Orleans County reveals a series of charming trail stops and waterfront parks perfect for exploring on foot or by bike. In Albion, Canalside Park provides a relaxing place to stroll along the canal, watch boats pass through the lift bridge, or enjoy a summer concert at the gazebo. From here, explore the surrounding Historic Courthouse District, where beautifully preserved 19th-century architecture adds another layer of discovery to the walk.

Further east, wander along Medina’s Erie Canal Port and Marina canal basin before following the towpath trail toward the Medina Falls and Aqueduct, where the Oak Orchard River passes beneath the canal. The village itself is known for its distinctive Medina sandstone buildings and vibrant downtown, making it easy to combine trail time with local dining and shopping.

In Holley, the canal continues to shape the landscape at Holley Canal Park. Stroll the boardwalk and nature trails to discover the scenic Holley Falls. The surrounding parkland and nearby village square offer a relaxing setting for picnics, concerts, and quiet nature walks. For those drawn to larger outdoor spaces, Lakeside Beach State Park provides four miles of trails overlooking Lake Ontario, with sweeping views of farmland and orchards along the shoreline. Hiking, biking, fishing, and cross-country skiing keep the park active throughout the year.

Nearby, Orleans County Marine Park and Yates Town Park offer additional opportunities to explore along the water, with walking trails, scenic overlooks, and lakeside views that highlight the county’s Great Lakes coastline.

Wyoming County

Wyoming County offers some of the most dramatic landscapes found along these scenic trails, led by the breathtaking beauty of Letchworth State Park. Often called the “Grand Canyon of the East,” the park stretches along the Genesee River as it plunges through a deep gorge and over three spectacular waterfalls. With 66 miles of hiking trails, you’ll be able to traverse cliffside paths, explore forested valleys, or enjoy sweeping views from overlooks high above the river. The park also offers biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and even hot air balloon rides that reveal the gorge from an unforgettable perspective.

For a quieter nature experience, the Trillium Nature Center in North Java provides eight miles of trails through wetlands, meadows, and beaver ponds. The preserve is known for its birdwatching opportunities and family-friendly features like Fairy House Lane, the Storybook Trail, and nature play areas designed to spark curiosity about the outdoors. Seasonal programs and guided hikes add opportunities to learn more about the region’s wildlife and ecosystems.
